Via John Stanko – Proverbs 18:20

Your daily dose of Proverbs:

“From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled;
with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied” – 18:20.

You should keep your words soft and sweet just in case you have to eat them! What’s more, you should fill your mouth with talk of God and His word as often as possible.  If you had to live off the fruit of your mouth, would you thrive or have an upset stomach? If you had to live off speaking God’s word, would you have enough to satisfy your hunger?  For an example of someone eating God’s words and then feeding others, see Ezekiel 3:2-4 and Revelation 10:10-11.

John Stanko, love

Via John Stanko – Proverbs 27:5

Your daily dose of Proverbs:

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love” – 27:5.

If love is really love, it cannot be hidden. It will act to benefit the one who is loved. You cannot say you love God but not love His people. In other words, you cannot be a loner Christian, which means you will be part of a church fellowship, where honesty may be part of the love that is expressed. What are you doing to show your love for God’s people? John wrote something important about loving God and His people in 1 John 2:9-11, which you will do well to read and apply.

Via: John Stanko – Proverbs 11:22

Your daily dose of Proverbs:

“Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion” – 11:22.

God has given you your gifts and your physical attributes. What good are they, however, if you don’t use them for God’s glory? Consider Esther and how God used her beauty to save her people.  How can you use what you have and who you are to further God’s purpose for you in your world? Paul reminded you not to be proud or boastful of what you have or what you can do in 1 Corinthians 4:6-7.

“There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end it leads to death” – Proverbs 16:25

God wants you to use reason, but you must start from the correct assumption or else your conclusions will always be wrong! It is not good to use the word “maybe” when you are referring to God’s will for your life. “Maybe I got that phone call because God wants me to go” or “Perhaps the Lord wants me to take that job” are examples of a wrong assumption that can lead to a bad decision. God is not a ‘maybe’ God; He makes His purpose clear. Note how David thought in 2 Samuel 4 and see that if he thought ‘maybe,’ he would have overlooked what the assassins had done, thinking that perhaps God had used them to promote him

Detachment Is Not Mean

detachment, John Stanko

I learned so much about detachment like two years ago as I was doing some research about the families of alcoholics. I think it is healthy in all relationships to have a certain level of detachment because it allows blame to lay where it is supposed to. Here is a quick definition from LIVESTRONG.com

What is detachment?
Detachment is the:
* Ability to allow people, places or things the freedom to be themselves.
* Holding back from the need to rescue, save or fix another person from being sick, dysfunctional or irrational.
* Giving another person “the space” to be herself.
* Disengaging from an over-enmeshed or dependent relationship with people.
* Willingness to accept that you cannot change or control a person, place or thing.
* Developing and maintaining of a safe, emotional distance from someone whom you have previously given a lot of power to affect your emotional outlook on life.

I surely believe that people are changed and delivered when they cannot blame their choices on anyone else who is trying to help them. I was so glad to read that the Bible addresses detachment.

Via John Stanko:

“Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts.
If you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you” – Proverbs 22:26-27.

You cannot want something for anyone more than they do. Don’t try to cover others’ debts, whether natural or spiritual, even if they are family.  If they are irresponsible, you can easily lose your money, your peace or both!  Stop fretting, let their problem go, and focus on your own. Are you minding your own business or straying into that of others?  Read Galatians 6:1-5 and see how it relates to today’s passage.

John Stanko, wisdom

Via John Stanko

“Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?” – Proverbs 8:1.

Wisdom is always broadcasting. Are you tuned to her channel? She is speaking, but are you listening? And what are you doing to record and remember what she says? It is important that you put your faith not in your ability to hear God’s voice but in His ability to ‘speak’ to you & answer your prayer for help.  To reinforce this, the book of Revelation states that heaven spoke to John in a loud voice 21 times!  (See Revelation 1:10 and 5:12 for  just two examples.)

Via John Stanko:

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
someone else, and not your own lips” – Proverbs 27:2.

God can do great things through people who don’t mind if others get the credit. Are you willing to see your ideas and work used for the good of others without them knowing you were the source of the blessing? At the same time, the verse says to allow someone else to praise you.  How easy is it for you to receive a compliment or honor? To see how someone answered both those questions posed, check out the story of Haman in Esther 2:19-23 and then Esther 6.

I thank God today for opportunities. Not because I am better than anybody or have more skills. But hopefully because God knows I will be a diligent worker and a light to others who need to know Him!

Today I am grateful for:

My new job

Increased opportunities for me and my boyfriend

New beginnings

Art and creativity

Patience and understanding

My parents

What are you grateful for?

“No harm befalls the righteous,
but the wicked have their fill of trouble” – 12:21.

This verse does not mean the righteous never have any struggles, but their struggles are not due to their wicked deeds. God uses their struggles to build character, while the trouble of the wicked is to judge sin and lead to repentance. Are you rejoicing in your trials, knowing that God is in control of your life?  If you are going through tough times and wonder why the wicked are not, read Psalm 94 to be encouraged today.

Spiritual Spring Cleaning

The weather is beautiful and I have been opening the windows, which has cast light on some of the corners and crevices of my home. Even the windows are covered in dirt! This is the time for spring cleaning. In our homes, we are scrubbing windows and cleaning out garages and closets that are full of winter junk. But we should also be cleaning and evaluating our spirits so that the junk of the past few months doesn’t continue to clutter our minds.

Christians are given tools to scrub our minds and behaviors. The word of God is just like bleach and ammonia and can take something that is dirty and make it clean again.

Psalms 119:9 says:

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word

What is dirty in your life? Do you have a dirty mouth? Can people respect the things you say, or do they have to wade through profanities and negativity? Is your thinking filthy? Do you assume that people are thinking the worst of you? Do you wake up with a stanky attitude? Is your behavior grimey? Do you talk about people behind their back? Are you a liar or a cheater in your relationships?

These are all things that can hinder you from hearing God’s word. Daily, I ask God to cleanse my heart and give me the strength to do things in a clean way. It is easy to say, but how do we actually change and what steps can we take to be a new and better person?

Renew Your Mind

We can renew our minds through confessing to what is wrong in our lives and using the word of God to correct it. Not Dr. Phil or your homegirl down the street. But God’s word. Because your favorite TV psychologist may tell you to dump your lying husband, but the Word says to forgive. That’s why I love using the Juanita Bynum Topical Bible, because it can take me right to my issues and the scripture I can meditate on to correct it. If you are battling depression, instead of waking up thinking the world is against you, you can make a list of scriptures that uplift you and reaffirm to you that God loves you. It sounds corny, but your faith and commitment to changing is a small step to the miracles God can perform in your life!

Take Your Prayer To The Next Level

Sometimes our prayers are filled with sadness, tears and we beg God to get us out of situations He never put us in. Try focusing your prayers on something besides yourself. I like to start out my prayers acknowledging the presence of God, telling Him how wonderful He is and expressing my gratitude for the many things that He has done for me. The sadder I am, the more I try to enumerate them. Then instead of trying to tell God what I need Him to do, I humble myself and ask Him to have his way in my life. I pray for my friends and my family and ask for forgiveness. I’m not saying I’m the perfect prayer warrior. I come to Him differently now than I did a year ago, and I can say that my relationship and understand that I get from God has changed as well. I try not to complain and whine to God, and my complaints and whining to my friends have changed as well.

Do or Say Something Good To Others

Just being nice, even when you don’t want to, can add a fresh air to your life. I used to hang out with this girl, and she never understood why people would always tell her she looked mean. She was mean! And she looked like she had a bad attitude! As a Christian, we are supposed to light up a room with positivity, not be Debbie Downer!  Being nice starts as a practice and can be a lifestyle. Make a point to be nice to five people a day. Compliment them on their clothing, hair, work ethic or anything! Buy someone lunch who looks sad (or hungry). After a few weeks, increase that number to 10. Before you know it, you will be a nice person!

Find Your Purpose

In the movie Mahogany, Diana Ross sings a song that goes, “Do you know where you’re going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you?” Some of us are going through life aimlessly, not knowing what God put us here for and missing blessed opportunities! At the beginning of the year, New Covenant invited John Stanko, a speaker and writer who helps people discover their purpose. If you visit his Website (www.purposequest.com) there is an assessment there that can help you to figure out what it is your good at. If you already know what it is that blesses you and others, then why aren’t you doing it? Don’t let your dreams die our of fear!

Cleaning you home can surely make you feel better and opening those blinds after a cold and snowy winter can make you feel good. But cleaning your mind and committing to being a better Christian will change you for the better! Don’t choose to be dirty when you can be clean!

2 Corinthians 7:1 says:

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

John Stanko, proverbs, quotes

Via John Stanko’s “Daily Dose of Proverbs”

“Ears that hear and eyes that see -
the Lord has made them both” - 20:12.

Many saw and heard Jesus, but they were unchanged by His presence. You must work to overcome the spiritual dullness that so easily entangles your senses. Do you have a journal to help you maintain what God has shown you? Do you take adequate time to think, reflect and listen? For help with your spiritual focus, you may want to heed Hebrews 12:1-2 for seeing and Luke 8:18 for listening
