The Anti-Pretty Movement

I have been trying my whole life to be pretty. There has always been girls prettier than me. Sometimes it was their hair or their clothes that made them pretty. Sometimes it was their face. When I got older, it became their bodies. I always wanted to be one of those headturning chicks, but I never have been. Now, I know I am cute…and this isn’t a low self-esteem rant. You ladies know what I’m talking about though. Though we may be comfortable in who we are, there is always that desire to be the baddest chick in the room.

I was shopping the other day, and I was looking at this skirt I thought would be sexy. And then I thought, ‘okay, I will be 30 this year so maybe this hemline should come down some.’ And next I thought, ‘who are you trying to be sexy for?’ I hate it when men talk to me in a rude way, and who cares what these other girls think about me! Why waste time and money trying to look a way that is not yourself. And that is where the anti-pretty movement comes from.

I inherently love makeup and hair. The upkeep of my skin and hair is what I do for me, and to be expressive. I love some of my clothes, but a lot of them look like something other than me. I either look like work or kickin’ it. When do I look like Donna? Do I have to attempt to look “pretty” all the time? Can’t I be plain and beautiful for once? I do love dresses, but do I have to wear one every time I dress up? What is with my pretty fascination?

So I am attempting to not put so much effort in my clothes and my “look” and I am just going to look like me for a minute. Not to say I won’t have my makeup and hair fresh, I just got other things to worry about than being pretty right now…

Sex In The City (In The Bible)

They have nothing on the women in the Bible!

I feel like the only woman in the world who isn’t excited about the release of Sex In The City 2. Unless you have been living under a rock, or with your nose inside your Bible, the story chronicles the lives of four flirty and successful New York City socialites juggling men, money, clothes and careers in a fast city.

Their decadent lifestyles have gained them legions of followers who pattern their personal style after their adventures. My friends look at me crazy when I tell them I have never, really watched Sex In The City. Maybe a few of those edited episodes on TBS. Even though I love fashion and Carrie is a writer, the whole thing was never really appealing to me.

The Bible features many virtuous and strong women. But it also features tales of passion, indiscretion, dram and redemption. They might not have been as well dressed as Samantha and them, but their stories are just as fascinating! Here are some interesting lessons from some not so notable women of the Bible, that might teach you more than just the correct way to pronounce designer’s names.

Lot’s Wife (The Bag Lady)

Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Genesis 19:24-27

Her story is not really a story. She is defined by a mistake she made. When God decided to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot and his family was allowed to escape and was told not to look back. Lot’s Wife, looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. How many of us women are delivered and set free from our bad circumstances and still look back at our past. The Bible tells us that this can destroy us. When God gives us a way of escape, He wants us to take it and run with it! Don’t let your past hold you up!

The Potiphar’s Wife (The  Lil’ Freak)

…Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

Genesis 39:6-9

She spotted the slave boy Joseph and though he was hot. Even though she was the master’s wife, she stepped to him. Joseph told her no for two reasons. One out of respect for his earthly master, secondly for his respect of his spiritual master. Then, the Potiphar’s wife got upset and told her husband that Joseph tried to rape her! This woman was manipulative, a liar, a cheater and a drama queen! In these days, she would have been the rich and lonely housewife trying to sleep with the pool boy and ruin his reputation. Some women are guilty of being scandalous toward men, and using their sexuality to get whatever they want. And though it seemed like Joseph’s life was ruined by his decision not to sleep with her, it eventually put him in the position to save his family. Women today think it is something wrong with a man when he doesn’t want to sleep with them. He may be more dedicated to his work for God than his work between the sheets!

Abigail (Ms. No More Drama)

His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband, a Calebite, was surly and mean in his dealings.

1 Samuel 25:3

Abigail was married to a rich and stubborn husband who didn’t know how to treat people. Her husband’s men were rude to David and his crew and wouldn’t give them any food to eat, even though they were polite and followed the protocol when entering their territory. To counter her husband’s ignorance, Abigail brought David and his men food and water, avoiding a possibly bloody situation. A few days later, Abigail’s husband died, the Bible says, “The Lord struck him. (1 Samuel 25:38)” David found out and ended up marrying Abigail.

Abigail was a peacemaker. We can learn from her to do all that we can to make peace. Women sometimes have the power to end a situation, and we should use that ability, not try to make men fight over us! She was also underestimated because she was pretty. Her first husband loved her because she was cute, but David saw that she was wise as well. She didn’t use her looks to solve the issue with David and her first husband; she used wisdom and kindness. In turn, David fell for her! How romantic!

The Adulterous Woman (Ms. Promiscuous Girl)

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”

John 8:3-5

Her people were about to stone her to death for being a whore. Back in the time of Jesus, and adulterous woman’s penalty for her sin was death. How many of us today would have been stoned due to her promiscuity? Certainly, our damsels from Sex In The City! But Jesus saved her! He infamously told the angry mob, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her. (John 7:8)” Her only duty after being saved was to “go now and leave your life of sin. (John 7:11)”

People may see you as a person who deserves to die. People might treat you like the low down person you are or used to be. Even if you have been with every man in town, on the low or in public, God sees you as a person who deserves a second chance. Had it not been for Jesus, who can save us from any sin, this woman’s story would not be here today to tell of redemption, change and the goodness of Jesus Christ! Her life is a testimony, and we all should use our past mistakes in order to show off what God can do!

Naomi Campbell & Her Ugliness

Supermodel Naomi Campbell was on The Oprah Show. She cried. She explained her exploits with her hot, new, married boyfriend. She even brought her beautiful momma to the show. Her demeanor was not that of a nearly 40-year-old woman. She seemed like she was 16 years old. She was unsure, not confident and said she didn’t even think she was pretty. Oprah asked her why she had run into so much trouble with the law. She has assaulted assistants, police officers and limo drivers. Most recently, she swatted a camera out of a videographer’s hand after being questioned about accepting “blood diamonds” from Liberian warlords. Campbell came off as a little girl, blaming others for her problems or having no clue about her self worth. At the end of the show, Oprah told her she was “too pretty externally not to be that pretty on the inside.” What Oprah really meant is that Naomi Campbell is ugly.

Drama, drama and more drama. How many gorgeous, successful, ambitious and seemingly perfect people do we know have a life full of drama? Do you feel like everybody picks on you, treats you unfairly and hates on you constantly? Maybe it’s not everybody else with the problem…you just might be the problem!

Ugliness is not an aesthetic thing. Ugliness is when people choose to be mean, impatient, and have an overall bad vibe about them. Ugly is a CHOICE that people make when they are too immature to keep their attitude in check and get their feelings across. I tell my young sister friends that ugly girls lie, cuss people out and don’t smile. Nobody likes to be around ugly girls. They may be gorgeous, but when they open their mouth, ugliness oozes out.

How many of us know women, well into adulthood, who choose to be ugly? Women have become so ornery and abrasive lately, it is hard to refer to us as ladylike. I just picked up a book for a young friend of mine called Every Teenager’s Little Black Book On How To Get Along With Your Parents by Blaine Bartel. Sure, its a book for teens about parents, but I think Naomi Campbell could benefit from reading this book. Ultimately, it comes down to accountability and being able to handle authority. If you don’t have those two under your belt, you can hardly call yourself an adult.

Tips that are to be developed as a teen, yet so many grown women lack! One section, called 4Keys to Communicating Well tells teens to:

  1. Think about things from the other person’s perspective FIRST
  2. Write down your point or opinion IN ONE SENTENCE
  3. Listen CAREFULLY to what other people are saying
  4. STAY CALM

God wants us to get along with everybody:

Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.  For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)

Not get all upset and accusatory:

Better a patient man than a warrior,
a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city. (Proverbs 16:32)

Respect those whom we work for:

Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. (Hebrews 13:17)

And respect those who work for us:

And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him. (Ephesians 6:9)

Our culture promotes being a diva and that being pushy, pissy and bratty is the way that a woman should act. I would beg to differ. Ms. Campbell talked about attending rehab and spending time with a therapist that is helping her with her issues. But anger is a spiritual problem. Ultimately, if you have a continuous problem with other people, then you have a problem with God. Admitting to your problem (not blaming others for pushing your buttons) and seeking the wisdom and understanding of the Bible can bring your emotions into submission.

God’s love makes you beautiful. Showing people that you love them, and that you are even-tempered is way more beautiful than being on the cover of any magazine. When people can see the love of God in you, it is amazing how that can calm a situation more than throwing a cell phone. I am going to pray that Naomi Campbell runs into a good, God-fearing Christian and can finally be that beautiful woman she has worked 25 years to convince the world exists. Don’t be a 40-year-old baby! It’s time to grow up!

We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. (1 John 3:14)

People always assume that being Christians means you have to give up your style and conform to the old church lady look (not that there is anything wrong with that). But if you can walk around reppin’ for Baby Phat, Sean Jean and Roc-A-Wear, you can surely rock a shirt that glorifies God! Here are a few shirts I found online that I think are sweet.

All these items come from C28 Christian Stores (www.c28.com)

Truly Seek T Shirt by Endure $12

God Is Love Shirt by Canvas $24.99

Jesus and You Shirt by Not Of This World $22.99

God's Image Shirt by Canvas $19.99
