Moonwalking From God

about me, diligence, sin

We often set big spiritual goals to walk like, talk like and be just like Jesus. Some of us vow to never think, feel, say or do certain things because they never want to turn back into the sinner they once were. People make goals to read the Bible in a year, once a day, pray for every meal and for everybody they know. As I write this blog, I know that I have set some lofty spiritual goals for myself, and lately, little by little, I have been backing away from them. For example, I have made the choice to embrace a lifestyle of healthier eating and exercise. But it is easy not to workout! I knew that before I set this goal for myself. Everyday I get further away from doing the things that I know God wants me to do. So how do I get back on the right track with God, and stop moonwalking away from what He wants from me?

The Apostle Paul understands how I feel. He puts it best when he confesses:

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Romans 7:15

I know working out gives me energy, helps me sleep better, helps my mood and get me into all my favorite clothes. I actually enjoy doing it. So why is it so hard to maintain a schedule? We know that the goals we set are there to make us better people, but we let life get in the way. We succumb to laziness, procrastination, excuses, busy schedules and everything in between that stops of from being motivated. I know I try hard, so I know you try hard too.

Some people call this phenomenon “backslidding,” which reminds me of a person who is climbing a mountain and keeps falling due to the difficulty. Following God can feel like that, but I am calling this issue moonwalking because I want to talk to people who are not so far away from their relationship with God, and can get back with a few steps. Always remember that without daily interaction with God, it will be easy for life and the enemy to infiltrate and get in your way.

It is surely easier to do bad things than good. It’s easier for me to get a double cheeseburger than prepare a salad for lunch everyday. It is easier to sit on the couch and watch TV than to move my feet and sweat. It’s easier to read a gossip magazine than to chew on the Bible. We work so much and do so many thing, we are in a constant state of wanting to relax. And honestly, sometimes studying the Bible and a serious prayer session with God is the last thing on our list of things to do.

I am trying to remember that real growth and results come from diligence and discipline. Yes, God gives us grace, but He also gives us knowledge and wisdom to accomplish the things we need to do. Life will never be too difficult to accomplish spiritual goals.

I will be meditating on Galatians 6:9 that says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” If we hold tight to the things that God needs us to do, we will see the rewards of them. I know God wants to doing things for a reason, and slowly getting away from them just deters His work.

I know you have seen Michael Jackson do this infamous dance, just remember, as easy as it is for him to slide backwards, it is just that easy for him to turn around and moonwalk back in his original direction. As long as we don’t get too far away from the Word, we can make minor adjustments so that we can get back on track. As I write this for you, I write to motivate myself this week. Be strong, don’t faint and stop dancing away from the promises God has for you!

diligence, how to

All relationships take hard work. You know how it is when you get a new boyfriend or girlfriend. We spend all of our free time gazing into his or her eyes, and restructure our lives to make sure our new sweetie is a part of our routine. To keep things fresh in a relationship, it takes work. If you are used to going to the movies on Fridays and that gets boring, finding new activities to learn each other and have a more intimate relationship takes a lot of effort.

God wants that kind of relationship with us. A lot of times we only call Him when we need something or are in trouble. How would you feel it if your most cherished friend only called when he messed up or needed money. Don’t you want to talk to the people you love when they are happy and excited about life too?

We are diligent when it comes to our professional lives, even our personal lives. We set our alarms for work and plan our schedules to the minute each week. We make sure we talk to our home girls each day. And don’t get me started on our TV schedules. Many of us know more about the femme fatales of Desperate Housewives than the women of honor in the Bible.

The definition of diligence is:

A zealous and careful nature in one’s actions and work; decisive work ethic; monitoring one’s activities to guard against laziness

Notice the definition says guarding against laziness. It is a proactive mindset. I think that you can be the most organized, workaholic go-getter and have a lazy, indecisive and distant relationship with God. What do you think has more value in the long run?

The Bible talks a lot about time management and hard work. Proverbs 13:4 says:

The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing; while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied

Proverbs 22:29 says:
Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men

Galatians 6:9 says:
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up

Yes, God wants you to do good work in the lives of others and prosper, but He also wants us to work at growing and having a relationship with Him. Some of us give Facebook and Twitter more of our time and attention than we do God.

So how do we are busy modern folks make time for our God? Here are some tips that I think will help us make God a priority in our lives.

1. Give Him your first and your last
Make sure when you wake up in the morning and go to bed at night that you can give God 10 or 15 minutes of just thanking Him for who He is, waking you up in the morning and keeping you and your family and friend safe overnight.

2. Bless your meals
Every time you eat take a few seconds to thank God for your food and ask Him to allow that food to nourish your body so that you do His will.

3. Plan to be thankful
Set you cell phone to go off once an hour so that you can remember to thank God for getting you through the work day, for keeping your kids and family safe, or just keeping your sanity through a stressful day. Even when your day is going bad, thank God for use of your limbs and body. Every hour find something new to be thankful for!

4. Use CDs, TVs and your computer
I know it is hard to find time to read the Bible. But because we know God wants us to work hard at our relationship with Him, we must go over and beyond to do it. Try buying the Bible on CD and listening to it while driving or at work instead of Lil Wayne. When you get home from work, instead of watching the news or 106 & Park, take one hour to watch TBN or Praise Network. I was surprised at how uplifting and enriching the programming is. Also, instead of social networking all the time, go to a site like this one, which helps you to read the Bible in one year. Set it as your homepage so that you make sure the first thing you do online is read something about God.

What ways do you build your relationship with God everyday?
